We often get asked what makes a good job application and whilst we know that writing a CV can be tricky and time-consuming, it's also a fantastic way to demonstrate your range of skills and experience and support your application.

So if you are looking for a new role then it's time to dust off the keyboard and check out our top tips to help you spring clean your CV.

1. Don't skip the basics

Make sure you include the basic information that any recruiter would expect to find on your CV, this includes:

  • Your contact information
  • Your work experiences/history of employment
  • Your education/training
  • Any relevant skills

Including a paragraph at the start of your CV is a good way to give an overview of yourself, your main skills and the type of role you are looking for.

2. Keep the formatting clear

Aim to make your CV as easy to read as possible. Choose a standard, clear font (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri), keep the text black and don't include any bright colours or imagery as these only distract from the content in your CV.

Have a clear structure with headings for each section such as: Contact Information, Employment/Work Experience, Education/Qualifications, Skills/Training.

When listing your employment make sure you provide the dates that you were employed, starting the with most recent. Recruiters often work in a fast-paced environment so the easier you can make your CV to read, the more likely you are to get an invitation to an interview.

3. Keep it short and sweet

Whilst you need to cover all the important information in your CV, keep in mind that a busy recruiter will often have limited time to read all of the CVs that they receive. Our advice is to try and keep your CV within two pages so the recruiter is more likely to have the time to read everything you write.

4. Tailor your CV to the job

One of the most effective ways to stand out from the crowd when applying for a job is to read the job description/advert for the job you are applying for and tailor your CV to that, demonstrating clearly why you would be a good fit for that role.

To do this, ensure that you include any transferable skills or relevant qualifications you have that may make you a good candidate for the job.

5. Update as you go

Often we get so busy with our day to day lives,   we can forget about some of the successes we have had. For this reason, updating your CV, even whilst you are happily employed in your current role is a good way to ensure you capture any achievements that you may want to talk about when you do start to look for a new role.

Taking pride in your CV is a great way to present yourself professionally and demonstrate your dedication and passion for the job.
